With less than five months left to the World Cup 2014, the official mascot of the event, Fuleco, begins to be produced on a large scale. One of the factories, located in Tianchang, Anhui Province, China, is responsible itself for the production of one million units.

In the 2010 South Africa World Cup, one of the Chinese factories linked to the production of Zakumi was forced to stop production after being accused of poor working conditions.

On the occasion, the Global Brand Group (GBG), which manages brands for FIFA, undertook the duty to carry out inspections at Chinese factories. The South African Trade Unions, in turn, threatened to disrupt the progress of the 2010 World Cup.

“South African consumers, believing that they are doing a patriotic gesture by buying the mascot for high retail prices, are not aware where do they come from or how they are produced,” said the union in March 2010.

The production of Zakumi, manufactured by Shanghai Fashion Plastic Products, was employing underage teens. According to the British newspaper News of the World, youngsters would be working for 13 hours per day in exchange for a salary of less than three dollars.
