A recent study on the coming of foreigners to Brazil during FIFA’s World Cup in 2014 was held by the Spanish company Forward Data, in partnership with Pires & Associates in Brazil. The survey indicates that, compared to the same period of 2013, during the World Cup days, the number of foreign tourists who come to Brazil by air in 2014 will be five times bigger.
According to the study, the participating countries in the 2014 World Cup are the main source of tourists to Brazil during the event, indicating that tourists follow their respective teams. The United States is the largest emitter; Chile, Australia and England tend to have the highest growth among the top ten. Italy, meanwhile, will double the number of travelers from 2013, despite it being the country with the lowest proportional increase.
According to the study, the 12 World Cup host cities will have a significant increase in the amount of visitors during the games in each of them. And the three most visited cities will be Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Salvador.
Domestic bookings for traveling from June to August soared, with a three-fold increase compared with the same period in 2013, and even with a growth nine times bigger when considering the period of June 1 to 26 (including the initial phases of the tournament).
Reservations for Rio de Janeiro, for example, show a sevenfold increase for the period between the opening ceremony and the six matches scheduled in the city, with peak arrival a few days prior to each scheduled game.

According to the study, the 12 World Cup host cities – Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Salvador, Fortaleza, Recife, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Natal, Manaus, Porto Alegre, Curitiba and Cuiaba – will have a significant increase in the number of visitors during the games in each of them.
Tourists with reservations for the Rio de Janeiro are mainly from the USA (21%), England (8%) and Argentina (7%). The study indicates that, as happened in South Africa, the trend is that the pace of airline reservations decreases as the event gets closer, since travelers made their reservations early.
The study also highlights that Brazilians traveling abroad this year should change the traditional pace in order to attend the final stages of the tournament in Brazil. The reduction will be of about 30%. To access the complete survey in Portuguese, click here.
