Two t-shirts models inspired by the 2014 World Cup launched by Adidas, sports brand that sponsor the event, in it´s american website, caused controversy. The models, according to Embratur’s president, Flávio Dino, allude to “sex tourism” in the country.
The Brazilian government is unhappy with those models. “We are not ok with sex tourism. Sex is obviously allowed during the World Cup, but we do not want a commodification”, Flávio Dino evaluated in an interview to O Estado de São Paulo newspaper.
One of the t-shirts seems to suggest that a printed heart is a butt in a bikini. The other model presents the phrase “Lookin’ to score”, which for one side is related to scoring a goal in soccer, it can also be related to the slang to getting girls.
In a note, Embratur stated that the company “vehemently repudiates the marketing of products that link Brazil to sex tourism” and that it is trying to contact Adidas for the removal of the shirts from the market.
